Light
(Ephesians 5:13-14)
“Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light” (Eph 5:14). Early church believers often sang this hymn, which centered on the theme of light for those being baptized. With its beautiful rhythm, this hymn urged a commitment to a new life and must have deeply touched their hearts.
1. Choosing the Light
Just as light reveals the reality of everything it touches, when God’s light shines on a person, it exposes all hidden filth. People are reproached as a result. However, reproach without true change holds little significance. We must decide whether to remain in darkness or leave it behind. Unfortunately, most people in such situations choose darkness. They either reject the light or even go so far as to attack it.
2. Becoming the Light
To walk the path of life, we must abandon evil and choose the light. Those who embrace the light gain salvation through it. However, what is even more remarkable is that they themselves become the light. They are no longer merely recipients of the light—they are the light. As such, they can shine the light upon others. Someone who was once darkness has now become a fellow worker of God, able to shine the light for others.
3. Shining the Light
If a building filled with smoke from a fire had no visible light, how could anyone escape such a hopeless situation? “Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead!” Thankfully, the light of Christ has shone upon us, and we have turned back to Him by responding to God’s call. The light that shone on us the day we were baptized was the Lord’s calling for us. We, who have responded to that call, are now the light. So, let us rise. Let us shine the light on souls groaning in the darkness.
