Christ and the Church
(Ephesians 5:22-24)
The relationship between Christ and the church is mysterious and beautiful. To worldly eyes, the church may seem like nothing more than a gathering of the insignificant. However, God has given Christ—the head over all things—to be the head of the church.
1. The Head of the Church
The One who is originally the head over all things has become the head of the church? Could the church truly be that great? Yes! The very fact that Christ is the head of the church shows how precious the church is. Christ gave everything to save the church, and as its head, He governs and rules over it. And the church, with a joyful heart, submits to Him.
2. The Savior of the Body
The church’s submission to Christ is never forced; rather, it sees this as natural. This is because Christ is not merely a ruler or a master; He is the One who sacrificed Himself for the church and, with devoted love, works for its happiness. That is why the church is always mindful of how it can please Him. It strives to understand His will and follow it. It also never ceases to sing praises to Christ. The church trusts in Christ completely.
3. Husband and Wife
There is a way to indirectly experience the beautiful relationship between Christ and the church—the relationship between husband and wife. A husband filled with the Holy Spirit sacrifices himself for his wife and submits himself to her happiness. Likewise, a wife filled with the Holy Spirit submits to her husband. She does this not only because she believes it is the role God has entrusted to her but also because she sees it as an act of submission to the Lord. When a husband and wife love one another and submit according to the order established by God, their home is no longer just a private space but a sacred place where God’s will is fulfilled.
