[1 Corinthians 12:4-11]
God
is alive and at work.
To man who cannot see God
He revealed Himself
in a clear and visible proof,
that is, Jesus Christ (Jn 1:18).
In Him, we have seen
the glory of God’s only begotten Son and the truth (Jn 1:14).
By believing in that truth,
the glory that was revealed in our hearts
manifested as power, the knowledge of the truth and a clear experience (Jn 14:16-17).
The experience that believers have
is the same yesterday and today (Heb 13:8).
People have a notional faith because they have no experience,
and they fall away into temptation
since a notional faith is not guaranteed by anyone.
Thus we need the Holy Spirit
to guarantee our spirit forever (Rm 8:16-).
The Holy Spirit testifies with various gifts
that He has come within us.
Let us not fall away after tasting the spiritual gifts (Heb 6:1-8).
○ The Holy Spirit’s gift
is the spiritual man’s capacity of spiritual power.
Without spiritual power, one cannot be spiritual.
○Although we are inept in earthly matters,
we are not in the Kingdom of God.
We must receive testimony to our faith through the Holy Spirit’s power.
○Before we believed, we were led by idols.
But after faith has come,
we must only be filled with the Holy Spirit and have power.
※Though we need to succeed in earthly matters also,
we must become the spiritual man.
We must be the ones who succeed in the spirit.
God, Jesus Christ, the Bible and the Holy Spirit God is alive. Because He is invisible, it is easy for people to think of God as a philosophical being. However God is alive, and hence is at work. Through Moses, God revealed Himself faintly to the Israelites. And the Israelites followed God by listening to Moses who had met God. When God manifested Himself to Moses, He called Himself as “the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob” (Ex 3:15). However, the one that Moses had met was actually an angel (Acts 7:30-35). When the time came, God sent His only begotten Son in His bosom to the world. Today, we do not perceive God as an abstract notion but are assured that He is living because He sent His only begotten Son. It is not with our imagination that we believe in God; we believe by seeing, hearing and knowing God. If unbelievers ask, “Have you seen God?” we must be able to say that we have, even unto death. This is all possible because God’s Son came into the world. Everything that Jesus said and accomplished was from God the Father. Even Jesus said, “Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves” (Jn 14:10-11). Apostle John made the confession that Jesus is the Son of God with certainty. Jesus is the Creator who was in God from eternity past and who created all things with Him (Prov 8:22-31). Jesus has seen God and listened to His words. Jesus knows God, and has fulfilled God’s will. The word given through Moses is also important, but we must listen to the words of Jesus. John 1:17 says, “For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” The angels do not know everything about God. Jesus said, “A servant does not know what his master is doing” (Jn 15:15). But Jesus, the Son of God, knew God, and thus revealed God. In spite of this, people would not believe in Jesus. And in regard to this, 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 says, “But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.” Jesus has already gone into Heaven, and nobody is able to see God anymore. Nevertheless, there is the Bible left in the world, written by the people who had personally seen and listened to Jesus. Through the Bible, we are able to know Jesus even now, though He is already in Heaven. To know Jesus through the Bible, or to know Him by seeing and listening to Him personally, is not at all different. The working of the Holy Spirit is what makes this possible. One Who is Profitable to God The word of God comes into our spirit through the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (Jn 6:63). Because God’s word is spirit, it enters our spirit and not the flesh. Our spirit became corrupt as a result of Adam’s sin. But by being baptized in Jesus’ name, we buried our old self that was under the Law, and came to have fellowship with God as the spiritual person. A person cannot have sound faith if he receives God’s word through his mind, not the Holy Spirit. Jesus said that when the Holy Spirit comes, He would convict the world in regard to sin, righteousness and judgment (Jn 16:8). He was emphasizing that the Holy Spirit would teach us the word of God both accurately and sternly. Our spirit cannot properly receive God’s word without the Holy Spirit. Some people say they are listening to the words of the Holy Spirit and try to treat Him like a fortune teller. Then there are others who take advantage of those desires of people and act as if they can see the future by the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come” (Jn 16:13). He also said, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you” (Jn 14:26). The Holy Spirit does not speak on His own accord but testifies to us of the words Jesus has spoken. Jesus who knows God, came into the world as the Son of Man and has entered Heaven. And the Holy Spirit is the One who works in order that the words of the Bible which Jesus has left in the world may be manifested to us as a reality. We must rely on the Holy Spirit and experience the truth that is written in the Bible. We have an infallible testimony to our faith. Even after a lifetime of going to church, people without such testimony plead at their death bed saying, “God, please save me if You are really alive.” Would such people be saved? We must not become unprofitable to God. Matthew 25:30 says, “And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” The reason God speaks His word to us is to use us. We have to make God use us. Our eternal dwelling is not on this earth. We will later leave this place and be glorified with the Lord in Heaven. Manifestation of the Holy Spirit It is written in 1 Corinthians 12:4-5, “There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.” The gifts of the Holy Spirit are various. However they are all the working of the Holy Spirit. There are also different ministries in the church such as pastor, deacon, teacher, choir, etc. but they are all used by the Lord. When the saints call Jesus Christ as Lord, they are confessing that they are His servants and that the ministry entrusted to them are from the Lord. 1 Corinthians 12:6 says, “And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.” Let us take serving the church as an example. Saints do not only give service at the worship center on Lord’s Days, but them earning an income through their work life during the week is also essential to the church. If a person is very profitable to God’s kingdom in God’s eyes, He may let him acquire more wealth. On the other hand, if God deems a person to an unprofitable hypocrite, He certainly will not help him. Just as He said, “For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away” (Matt 25:29), such a person could even lose what he has. It is not wrong to ask God to help us acquire much material wealth. In the same way we ask for spiritual sense, we can ask God for material abundance. The important matter is whether or not that will be profitable to God. If anybody seeks material abundance for God’s kingdom and uses that wealth for His kingdom, God will certainly help him. It says in 1 Corinthians 12:7, “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.” Faith must be followed by experience, and the person who has experience needs to grow. Hebrews 6:1-2 says, “Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.” The sad thing is that many people who have received the spiritual gifts fall away instead of actually maintaining them. We need to ponder over the word of warning that there is no chance of repentance for those who fall away after they have tasted the heavenly gift, become partakers of the Holy Spirit, tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come (Heb 6:5-6). We should not be led astray by our fleshly desires and slide back into the world again. Jesus said, “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and gathered some of every kind, which, when it was full, they drew to shore; and they sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but threw the bad away” (Matt 13:47-48). God does not accept a person just because he came and sat in the church on the Lord’s Day. As the fisherman picks out the bad from the net, and the farmer separates the chaff from the grains he harvests, the Lord will pick out the unprofitable ones from those who call on His name. We need to think about how we might draw God’s attention and please Him. 1 Corinthians 12:8 says, “For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit.” The word of knowledge does not refer to general knowledge. There has to be objectivity in knowledge, and one must be able to give up his life for it. One cannot testify to others of a general knowledge that he himself is not even sure of. So through the Holy Spirit, we need to understand what God is doing. In verse 9 and 10 it says, “To another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.” The word “prophecy” here does not mean the act of fortune telling. The words in the Old Testament are basically all prophecies concerning Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself said that all the prophecies of the prophets and the Law were until John the Baptist who revealed Jesus Christ to the world (Matt 11:13). Ever since the Holy Spirit has come to the believers, the word “prophet” refers to a preacher, that is, the person who confirms the fact that Jesus Christ has brought all the prophecies to fulfillment. There are people who desire to see visions. Those people need to ask themselves about the motive behind that desire, whether it is simply out of curiosity or because they want to show off to others of having such experience that others do not have. A person may not really benefit much from just seeing visions itself. In order to utilize them, he would have to have the gift of discerning spirits as well. Be Humble Before the Holy Spirit 1 Corinthians 12:11 says, “But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” God desires to give us those various gifts freely. The important question is how much we actually need them and whether or not we are able to handle them. Parents do not buy a car for their baby child just because they love him or her. They would have wait at least until their child grows up and gets a driver’s license. The reason God does not grant us some spiritual gifts is because we are not yet able to handle them. And if we continue to remain in such a state, the likelihood of receiving any more gifts will be diminished. The evidence we have become to belong to God has been demonstrated by God pouring the Holy Spirit in us. The words of the Bible get manifested to us as a reality also by the working of the Holy Spirit. The fact that our faith is not mysticism that follows emotions is also being confirmed by the Holy Spirit. Hence, the saints must have the manifestations of the Holy Spirit. God does not abandon us. Jesus said, “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also” (Jn 14:18-19). And indeed, Jesus has sent the Holy Spirit after He ascended to Heaven. Now we need to long for the manifestations of the Holy Spirit. We must have God use us. Would a person be profitable to God if he ignores the Holy Spirit and says things like, “I also received the gift of tongues but it turned out to be nothing special?” We must be humble before the Holy Spirit. In order that we do not become unprofitable to God, we must be blessed and happy through the Holy Spirit
I am truly happy. Jesus came to this earth to execute the will that God the Father had planned in Heaven. Thus, the fact that you are doing God’s work is surely considered as joy to God. My joy is doing the spiritual works that the Lord has commanded me to complete. I am truly happy because I have become the stump for the works that can continue to be accomplished without stopping. I am writing books and leaving many writings so that the works that I have started can continue even if I’m not here. Seoul Sungrak Church was established with a purpose: ‘A church that pleases God.’ Hence, its works should not be stopped just because I, Semuon, am not here in the world anymore. I have started the work alone in the beginning; however, Sungrak Church will take the baton to continue the work until the Lord returns. Therefore, the Overseer cannot just lead worship, but have the ability to continously push Berea Movement forward with professionalism. If the church falls, then the church will put aside the works demanded by the Lord and be comfortable with mere religious ceremonies. This is because not everyone can easily obey the faith given by God. It is rather easier to follow their own convictions and worship in their way. Following God-given faith is truly a rough road to take. It surely can be a drudgery to obey God who cannot be seen to believe. I have many flaws and have done many shameful things against my conscience; yet, I am happy only when I come before Jesus. The world does not forgive or understand me. And my flaws have never been forgiven by the world. So eventually, I receive persecution and embarrassment. However, only Jesus forgives and even forgets my sin and thus, I receive freedom when I come before Jesus. I can only be called as righteous and receive God’s love when I come before Jesus. Hence, without walking with Jesus, I cannot see God and dare to call God as Father. Now, I never doubt that God is my Father. Whatever God gives me is the best and thus, God gives me the Holy Spirit as a gift. The Holy Spirit knows all the deep things of God and His state of affairs. He is the Spirit of truth. Hence, there is no greater happiness than receiving the support of the Holy Spirit for my life. The works of the world is too complicated and tiring. Thus, if the Holy Spirit does not help, then I am powerless. However, I am thankful now because I am of the Holy Spirit. Lord! Hold me tightly. Pastor Ki-Dong Kim

Outline and Summary translated by Sarah Nam Chief Editor: Helen Nam
I am definitely happy because even after I leave this world, there are companions who could continue my accomplishments and works. I wonder what the Lord considered as true joy.
This is the hope of my entire life.
